COVID-19: NYSC announce plans to complete Batch A stream one orientation course

National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Tuesday, said the suspended 2020 Batch ‘A’ Stream One Orientation Course which was suspended due to Coronavirus pandemic would be completed when the Scheme received the green light from the Presidential Task Force (PTF).

NYSC suspended the 2020 Batch ‘A’ Stream One Orientation Course just one week into the exercise as a proactive measure to avert the spread of COVID-19 to any of the Orientation Camps.

The Director-General, Brigadier General Shuaibu Ibrahim stated this during a courtesy visit to his counterpart of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), Dr Chikwe Ihekweazu, in Abuja.

He said conscious of the possibility of the further or complete lifting of lockdown, the strategies mapped out by the NYSC Management had taken care of various scenarios, and would be presented to the Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19 through the NCDC for guidance.

Ibrahim said other operations of the Scheme were scaled down in line with the Federal Government’s restrictions order, adding that the Passing-out of the 2019 Batch ‘B’ Stream One Corps members was low-keyed with full adherence to the COVID-19 prevention protocols.

He also briefed his host on the various COVID-19 interventions made by NYSC, especially through Corps members’ activities all over the country, including sensitization; production and distribution of face masks, liquid soaps, hand sanitizers, automated disinfection chambers; as well as automated and foot-operated liquid soap, hand sanitizer and water dispenser.

Ibrahim solicited the PTF’s support in the funding of mass production of the automated disinfection chambers for use in all the NYSC Orientation Camps.
He commended the NCDC for its role in the overall national efforts at containing the COVID-19.

In his response, the NCDC Director-General, Dr Chikwe Ihekweazu, commended NYSC for its support to the fight against the coronavirus through Corps member’s activities. He particularly expressed delight at the fabrication of handwashing machines and production of disinfectants amongst other interventions.

Ihekweazu, who praised the contributions of the Scheme to the unity and development of the country, stressed that it deserved every form of support to enable it to succeed.

He said the proposals presented by the Director-General would be studied and recommendations made to the appropriate authorities.

FCT Police Inspector kills his colleague, shoots Superintendent before committing suicide

Tragedy struck at the Federal Capital Territory Police command earlier today when an Inspector at the Dutse Alhaji Division, opened fire on another officer, a Corporal, killing him on the spot. The suspect also inflicted gunshot wounds on a Deputy Superintendent before turning the gun on himself and opening fire leading to his death.

Confirming the unfortunate incident, the FCT Police command spokesperson, Maryam Yusuf, said the matter is being investigated.

“The FCT Police Command regrettably condemns the unfortunate incident that took place at Dutse Alhaji Division on Saturday 21st December 2019 at about 4.30pm involving the murder of a Police  Corporal by an  Inspector of Police.

Preliminary investigation reveals that the deceased Inspector fired a shot at the Corporal leading to his death and injuring a Deputy Superintendent before he committed suicide.

While commiserating with the family members of the deceased, the Commissioner of Police has ordered a discreet investigation into the incident and put measures in place to forestall the reoccurrence of such incident. The Command urges residents to remain calm while reiterating its commitment to provide adequate security during the Christmas/New year Celebration. ” the statement read

Shocking moment woman lifts her maid up and slams her to the ground (video)

Nigerians have expressed outrage after a video of a woman lifting her maid up and throwing her to the ground was shared online.

In the heartbreaking video, the woman is seen reaching into the car to drag out a child believed to be her maid. She then lifts her into the air and slams her to the ground.

The girl stood immediately and ran off, afraid of what her madam could do next and the woman ran after her.

It is not clear what led to the woman's outrage but she is heard in the video ranting about "ATM". It is suspected the maid might have misplaced her ATM card.

Nigerians who watched the video are shocked by it and are asking for the abusive woman to be found and prosecuted.

A Facebook user claims the woman lives in Enugu and they supplied an address which they alleged is hers.

Four taxi drivers tortured to death in Brazil 'as revenge after gang leader's sick mother had a ride cancelled'

A gang leader reportedly ordered the killings of four ride-sharing drivers in Brazil after his sick mother had a ride cancelled.

According to reports, the four victims, aged between 23 to 48, were called to the Jardim Santo Inácio favela in Salvador before being tortured and killed.  Two of the drivers worked for Uber and the other two for a Brazilian taxi app company, 99, with a fifth driver notifying the police after escaping.

The man reportedly described his abduction on local television, saying he was led behind a shack after being taken from his car at gunpoint.  The driver said he was tied up, beaten and tortured but managed to flee into a swamp when one of the victims grabbed a suspect's gun. 

Rui Costa, the Bahia governor, said: 'The gangster ordered these people killed because his mother called Uber, but the car never arrived'. Two suspects in the murders were killed in a police shootout on the same day and the gang leader who ordered the killings was found fatally shot two days later.

According to The Guardian, an Uber spokeswoman said: 'Uber deeply regrets this brutal and shocking crime.' A favela is a crime-ridden slum, or 'shanty town', and lays on the outskirts of cities in Brazil. The areas have long been dominated by gangs who traffic illegal drugs.

U.S Government places Nigeria on ‘Special Watch List (SWL)’ of countries that tolerate religious persecution

Nigeria has been added to a “Special Watch List (SWL)” of countries that have engaged in or tolerated “severe violations of religious freedom" by the United States government. 

The West African Country was added to the SWL following the 2018 report of the United States Commission for International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) which recommended designation of Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern (CPC). 

Some of the cases cited in the USCIRF 2018 report include violation of rights of Shi’a members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN) and violent clashes in Middle-Belt states. 

The 2018 report partly reads; 

“Religious freedom conditions in Nigeria trended negatively in 2018. The Nigerian government at the national and state levels continued to tolerate violence and discrimination on the basis of religion or belief, and suppressed the freedom to manifest religion or belief.

"Religious sectarian violence increased during the year, with Muslims and Christians attacked based on their religious and ethnic identity. 

“The Nigerian military and government continued to violate the religious freedom and human rights of the Shi’a members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN). IMN leader Sheikh Ibrahim Al Zak Zaky remained in detention. 

“However, in 12 Muslim-majority northern Nigerian states, federalism has allowed the adoption of Islamic Shari’ah law in the criminal codes. The Nigerian constitution also establishes the roles of customary law and Shari’ah courts for Islamic personal law, family”.

Making announcement of Nigeria being added to the SWL, U.S Secretary of State Mike Pompeo also disclosed that  al-Nusra Front, al-Qa’ida in the Arabian Peninsula, al-Qa’ida, al-Shabab, Boko Haram, the Houthis, ISIS, ISIS-Khorasan, and the Taliban have been designated as Entities of Particular Concern.

He said; 

“On December 18, 2019, the Department of State re-designated Burma, China, Eritrea, Iran, North Korea, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Tajikistan, and Turkmenistan as Countries of Particular Concern under the International Religious Freedom Act of 1998 for having engaged in or tolerated “systematic, ongoing, [and] egregious violations of religious freedom.

“The Department renewed the placement of Comoros, Russia, and Uzbekistan on a Special Watch List (SWL) for governments that have engaged in or tolerated “severe violations of religious freedom,” and added Cuba, Nicaragua, Nigeria, and Sudan to this list.”

"My son's first day on Earth seemed destined to be his last" Bovi and wife narrate their son's scary birth story as he turns 10

Comedian Bovi and his wife Kris marked their son's birthday by sharing the story of his birth and how he almost didn't survive.

Sharing a photo of his son, Bovi wrote:

"Chukwu Onye ebere the hands are together” the nurse screamed in panic as she stared down the vagina. Ten years ago, my sons first day on earth seemed destined to be his last. At a private hospital in Ogba, the nurses operated in panic mode rather than urgency. The doctor on duty, I would later find out, was in his office but refused to come out. He asked the nurses to handle the delivery. @krisasimonye was screaming in pains. The umbilical cord was around the babies neck. She wanted to push so bad. But the nurses realized that one of the pieces of equipment they were meant to use wasn’t in the tray. A nurse dashed out to go get it. @krisasimonye screamed in anguish “why are you doing this to me”. They had insisted earlier that it was false labor. She was sure it wasn’t. One of them decided to check again and behold it was time. And they weren’t ready. They actually told her to hold on when all she wanted to do was push. Eventually David was born. Swollen all over. Eyes round and shut like a corpse. Still. Lifeless. Numb. Ugly. They raised him up, turned him upside down and started to slap his butt. Time paused. Silence. Sound. Cry. Breath. Life. He had arrived. I was hurt that the first thing my first fruit had to do was fight to come to life. But I took solace in the fact that he won his first of many battles. Fast forward to hours later and the doctor comes to our room to felicitate with us. He met a blank cold stare from us. And I cannot forget his stupid unprofessional words “I’m so sorry. I got info that one of my good friends died. I just couldn’t gather myself to come. I was just dazed in my office”. The words of a trained doctor. Anyway, here we are today, ten years later. Happy birthday to my son, David Abovi Ugboma jr.
